Charles L. Chatmon is a writer, interviewer, community organizer, and lifelong literary citizen whose work spans books, essays, author interviews, and grassroots cultural events. For more than two decades, he has been a steady presence in the literary landscape — amplifying voices, building community, and creating spaces where stories can thrive.
His journey began with a simple truth: stories matter. As a young reader growing up in Los Angeles, Charles found refuge and possibility in libraries, comic books, and the imaginative worlds that shaped his early sense of identity. That love of storytelling eventually evolved into a career dedicated to writing, teaching, and uplifting others through the written word.
Charles is the author of several books that explore personal history, cultural memory, and the everyday experiences that shape who we become. His writing blends clarity, emotional resonance, and a deep respect for lived experience. Across essays, reflections, and narrative nonfiction, he examines themes of legacy, resilience, community, and the quiet moments that reveal our humanity.
His work has appeared across multiple platforms — including Medium, Substack, and his personal website — where he continues to publish essays that invite readers into thoughtful conversations about creativity, identity, and the world around us.
Beyond the page, Charles has spent years building real‑world literary community. He served as Executive Director of the Los Angeles Black Book Expo, helping to create one of the region’s most vibrant showcases for Black authors, publishers, and readers. He also organized a mobile bookstore and a series of literary events in Vallejo, California, bringing books directly into neighborhoods and connecting readers with local writers.
These projects were more than events — they were acts of cultural stewardship. Charles’s work has consistently centered accessibility, representation, and the belief that literature should meet people where they are.
