Charles L. Chatmon is a writer, essayist, and archivist whose work explores the stories that shape us, the memories we carry, the communities that raise us, and the creative traditions that define Black literary life.
Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Chatmon draws deeply from the neighborhood’s history, culture, and resilience. His writing is rooted in place: the streets, voices, and lived experiences that continue to influence his perspective. Through essays, fiction, and cultural commentary, he examines how identity is formed and how personal and collective memory intersect.
For more than two decades, Chatmon has written about community, history, and the emotional truths found in everyday life. His work blends personal reflection with journalism and archival research, shaped by years of interviewing authors, artists, and community figures whose stories deserve preservation. His commitment to documenting Black literary voices has made him a quiet but essential steward of cultural memory.
Today, Chatmon focuses on creating work that honors the past while speaking to the present, reflective essays, stories shaped by South Central’s legacy, and commentary that connects personal experience to broader cultural history. He publishes new writing weekly on Substack, shares literary reflections and readings on YouTube, and continues to expand his archive of Black creative expression.
Whether writing about the neighborhood that raised him, exploring the craft of storytelling, or reflecting on the lessons of a life lived in community, Chatmon’s work remains grounded in honesty, depth, and a deep respect for the stories that define us.
Charles has dedicated his efforts to building inclusive literary communities. As a former director of the Los Angeles Black Book Expo and organizer of local bookstore events, he creates spaces where diverse voices can thrive. His work emphasizes accessibility and representation, making literature a bridge to connection and cultural enrichment.
The Story Behind the Page explores the moments, memories, and creative sparks that shape a writer’s life. Each week, Charles L. Chatmon blends reflective essays, intimate conversations, and archival insights to reveal the stories behind the stories.
If you’re new to my work, these essays and reflections offer a window into the themes I return to — community, memory, creativity, and the stories that shape us.
